A Study of Characteristics of Patients at International Clinic of University Hospital

Abstract
Background: There are more and more individual visit or family living in Korea for a few years because of frequent sociocultural exchange as globalization. This influences the pattern of medical service needs among foreigners with the population shift. We have provided good medical service to foreigners (3,277 patients, 11,899 cases) over the past four years. This study is to provide good quality medical service to the people who visit the international clinic.

Materials and methods: This study is an analysis of 3,277 patients (11,899 cases) in the International Clinic at
Soonchunhyang University hospital kom Feb. 1 1999 to Jan. 31 2003. The medical records of patients were reviewed and
analyzed by frequency and percentage.

Results: By gender grouping, 5,903 cases (49.6%) were males and 5,996 cases (50.4%) were females out of 11,899 cases. Those who were between 0-9 years old (3,296 cases, 27.7%) made up the largest age group. The most frequent visitors were Americans with 1,898 cases (15.9%), and on average, each person visited 3.63 times. On the other hand, Libyans and Indians were the most visited per capita with a frequency of 7 times. The most common diagnosis of Out-patient treatment was upper respiratory tract infection with 1,433 cases (12.0%), followed by vaccination (918 cases, 7.7%)). Accordingly, the most visited department of out-patient clinic was internal medicine department, 3,189 cases (26.8%).
